Pay by bank with GoCardless

Last updated 24 October 2026.

Kwikbill lets your clients pay an invoice straight from their bank account, with no card and no typing of account numbers. Payments are collected by GoCardless into a GoCardless account that belongs to your business. Kwikbill never holds your money.

Who can use it

  • Businesses in the UK, Germany, France and Ireland, paid in GBP or EUR.
  • Clients with a UK or euro-area bank account that supports instant bank payments (most do).
  • Invoices only. Estimates, credit notes and purchase orders are not payable.

Connecting your GoCardless account

Go to Settings → Client payment options → Bank payments (GoCardless). Choose Create a GoCardless account if you are new to GoCardless, or Connect an existing account if you already have one. GoCardless asks you to sign in and to agree to its Connected Merchant Agreement, then sends you back to Kwikbill. Your business name, country and email are filled in for you. Only the business owner or an admin can connect or disconnect.

After connecting, GoCardless verifies your business. While it is under review clients can still pay, but GoCardless holds payouts. If GoCardless needs more information, Kwikbill shows a link to finish verification. Once verified, payouts reach your bank on GoCardless's usual schedule.

How a client pays

  • Every GBP or EUR invoice you send carries a Pay by bank button on its payment page. You can switch it off per invoice on the Send tab.
  • The client clicks it, picks their bank on GoCardless's secure page, approves the payment in their banking app and is returned to the invoice.
  • When GoCardless confirms the payment, Kwikbill marks the invoice paid, records the payment under Payments and emails the client a receipt. Confirmation usually takes a few minutes.
  • Partial payments are supported: the button asks for the outstanding balance. If you allow tips, the client can add one.

Fees

1.4% + 20p per payment in total, deducted by GoCardless before the money reaches you, so there is nothing to pay separately. Fees are not returned if you refund the client. Full details are in our terms of service.

Refunds, failures and reconciliation

  • Refunds are made from your GoCardless dashboard. Record the refund in Kwikbill by deleting or adjusting the payment on the invoice.
  • If a payment fails or is cancelled at the bank, nothing is recorded and the invoice stays unpaid; the client can try again from the same link.
  • Every recorded payment keeps the GoCardless payment ID as its reference, so you can match it to your GoCardless payouts.

Disconnecting

Click Disconnect in Settings → Client payment options, or revoke Kwikbill from your GoCardless dashboard. Either way the Pay by bank button disappears from your invoices immediately and Kwikbill discards its access. Payments already collected are unaffected.
